Your First Acupuncture Visit
Your initial acupuncture visit takes
approximately two hours and includes a detailed health history, a
physical exam, and an acupuncture treatment. I will ask you a wide
range of questions about your symptoms, your eating and exercise
patterns, your sleep habits, and your emotional states.
Treatment Frequency and the Benefits of
Ongoing Care
As an acupuncturist, I focus on the relationship
between the mind, body, and spirit and take a holistic approach to
health. I am interested in learning about the root causes of your
concerns or issues, not simply relieving your symptoms. My goal is to
treat your basic internal constitution, rooting out the problem rather
than just temporarily relieving a set of symptoms.
Your health needs will determine the frequency
of treatment with acupuncture. Most patients begin acupuncture treatment
to receive quick relief from physical pain and discomfort or major
emotional struggles. If your symptoms are noticeable, frequent, and/or
have been long-term, you may benefit from consistent treatments over a
period of time. Depending on your unique concerns, you may be encouraged
to make frequent visits over a period of weeks to promote sustained
recovery. Each visit builds on previous visits, paving the way toward
eliminating your issues and complaints. Your age, lifestyle and the
quality and quantity of your Qi energy determine treatment care. (Qi
energy is explained under the section About Acupuncture in this
website.)
Once your immediate needs have been addressed,
you are encouraged to move to a maintenance schedule of treatment. This
type of care preserves the initial progress you have made. Visits may be
monthly, bimonthly, or seasonally. Preventive care strengthens your
body’s resistance, keeping you healthy, balanced and potentially free
from illness. Similar to preventive dental or gynecological
appointments, regular acupuncture visits often ensure that small
problems are treated before they become major concerns.
Your Role in the Healing Process and Your
Partnership with Your Practitioner
As a treatment modality, acupuncture is not
something that is done to you as a passive recipient. Rather, you become
an active participant in the healing process. To gain maximum benefit
from your treatment, it is important that you take care of your health
by eating nutritious foods and by getting adequate rest and exercise.
The more you actively engage in your healing process, the more effective
your treatment will be. Focusing on your health and committing to a
healthy lifestyle are the best steps you can take for your well-being.
Having the opportunity to openly and honestly
discuss your health concerns with a health care provider – and having
someone really listen—may be new to you. Consider this an opportunity to
form a partnership -- to become a healthier person and create a deeper
connection with yourself and others. My ultimate goal is to help you
engage in your own healing process to achieve harmony and balance.
Your questions and thoughts around this topic
are a welcome part of your treatment sessions.
